banana - Things Fall Apart - Ezinma
Ezinma is Okonkwo's daughter from his second wife, Ekwefi. Ekwefi had numerous troubles with childbirth in the past, with nine unsuccessful pregancies resulting in unborn babies or children who ended up dying at a very young age. Ezinma was the first child to make it past age four, so Ekwefi feels a very strong attachment to her and is extremely protective. Okonkwo also is particularly fond of Ezinma. Though it is in his nature to support and favor masculinity, he knows Ezinma is special. He even states that he wishes she were a boy because she would make an excellent son. One night, Chielo, the priestess of the Oracle of the Hills and the Caves, summons Ezinma to see the Oracle. Though Ekwefi protests, Chielo takes her. Ekwefi follows Ezinma and Chielo all night, despite the impenetrable darkness and fear. By morning, she sees Okonkwo and he tells her that Ezinma is safe. This strange meeting of Ezinma and the Oracle leaves the reader wondering what business the Oracle has with Ezinma, and why it was so urgent that she come see him. In part two, my prediction is that something bad will happen to Ezinma. Her meeting with the Oracle seems to have a hidden reason, which I believe will be revealed in part two. Additionally, Ekwefi had so many problems in the past with losing children, it almost seems inevitable that something would happen to Ezinma.

I disagree. I do not believe something will happen to Ezinma because I do not think the author would put Ekwefi through that tragedy. Ekwefi has been through a lot in her life including the death of nine of her children. There is a conversation between Ekwefi and Chielo (I think) earlier in the novel in which they said Ezinma would live because she was past the age on six, and if children lived past the age of six, they were going to live. Since Efwefi has had so many problems in the past with losing children, I think she would be blessed with the life of Ezinma.
